Ah, summer. For students and teachers, that means a whole lot of free time. So starts the season of movie-going. And with the new movie Max coming out, it reminded me how much we can simultaneously love and hate dog movies. That’s because in a lot of action and adventure movies that feature a dog, the dog unfortunately doesn’t always make it to the end of the movie alive. Thankfully, I’ve found a few action/adventure movies where the dog makes it through to the end.
So if you’re in the mood for a movie with a happy dog ending, check out these:
- Back to the Future – Sure, Einstein the dog is basically Doc Brown’s test subject, but somehow he makes it out of the movie alive even after an 88 mph time travelling ride to the future.
Labyrinth – Sir Didymus rides, yes, rides his sheepdog, Abrosius, into battle. But Abrosius isn’t all about battle like his rider. In fact, the dog’s cowardly nature saves him from being injured in battle.
Men in Black – Frank, the pug in Men in Black, isn’t exactly a dog… in fact he’s an alien. But he still makes the list because he manages to survive everything despite being in a dog’s body. And he even gets a bigger role int he sequel as an agent!
Kick-A** 2 – Captain Stars and Stripes has a German Shepherd, Eisenhower, who’s trained to attack enemies. But even throughout all the death in the movie, Eisenhower comes out unscathed. Even the bad guys says he won’t kill the dog, because “I’m not that evil.”
Independence Day – Boomer, the star dog of Independence Day, was a full-on hero in the movie and made it out alive! He even makes an epic jump from a burning car to land safely beside his owners. An epic action shot.
While these movies aren’t centered around the dogs, it’s nice once in a while to know you’re going to sit down and watch an action movie where the pooch comes out tail wagging.
